Harvey boiled Monday and Tuesday evenings.

70 gallons of Grade B.

We are hanging in there!

Monday, March 29, 2010

No sap for Saturday or Sunday. We were really cold this weekend.

13 degrees at night and warming up to about 36 during the day.

We did get a run today and Harvey is boiling tonight.

It looks like our season may be coming to an end.

Throughout the state, sugarmakers have only made about a half a crop, compared to last year.

Friday, March 26, 2010

Harvey boiled last night and this afternoon.

Grade B....40 gallons yesterday, 20 gallons tonight.

Thursday, March 25, 2010

No boiling yesterday. It didn't get warm enough to make the sap run.

25 this morning, high of 49 today. It could be a good day.

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

We had a freeze last night and woke to snow falling this morning.

27 last night, 38 today. Not sure if it will be high enough for the sap to run.

Harvey boiled last night...30 gallons of Grade B.

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Harvey made 35 gallons of Grade B.

Rained all night. This morning we have rain with a little snow.

No freeze last night. Not sure what to expect today.

We have an approximate total of 750 gallons so far...about half a crop.

Monday, March 22, 2010

Sap started running slowly yesterday and we didn't think we would boil.

Then we had a small snow storm and the sap picked up. Maple trees love a storm.

Harvey made 15 gallons of Grade B.

Sunday, March 21, 2010

We had visitors to our sugarhouse last night. My brother, Dwight, his wife, Julie and their daughter, Riley and friends Leslie, Mark, & Jack Hotopp.

Harvey made 14 gallons of Grade B last night.

Saturday, March 20, 2010

Harvey made 45 gallons of Grade B last night.

It was 64 degrees here yesterday. The streams are opening, but we still have a lot of snow in our woods.

Harvey's mother always said that sugaring wasn't over until the ice was off the pond...looks like we have a lot more sugaring to do!

Friday, March 19, 2010

Harvey boiled last night...33 gallons of Grade D.

Grade D is Harvey's grading system for very "dark" syrup!

We need another freeze, which we didn't get last night or some precipitation.

Thursday, March 18, 2010

Harvey had a releaser pump break yesterday. This pump pumps the sap from the vacuum releaser to the storage tanks. In layman terms...a pump that is much needed at sugar making time!

After buying a new pump, Harvey made 50 gallons of Grade B. Excellent flavor, but dark color.

It was very warm yesterday high 50's, this could have contributed to the darker syrup.

No freeze last night, but sap ran all night. We have half a storage tank of sap this morning.

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

40 Gallons of A Dark this afternoon.

Sap is still running tonight, but not enough to boil.
Harvey & Ryan boiled last night...30 Gallons of A Dark.

We received some much needed rain. Moisture helps the trees produce sap.

We had a freeze last night. The first one since last Thursday.

Sunday, March 14, 2010

I took this picture today...doesn't look like spring here yet!

Harvey boiled late this afternoon...20 gallons of A-Medium.

We haven't had a freeze at night since Thursday night.

Sorry I haven't posted for a few days...life got ahead of me.

Harvey made 45 gallons of Fancy Friday night and 40 gallons of Fancy last night.

We have 14 barrels (33 gallon) of Fancy as of today.

Last year we had 1 barrel of Fancy the entire season!

We need some moisture and it looks like it might rain today. Very dark, cloudy and windy.

Friday, March 12, 2010

Did not freeze last night, but the sap ran all night. We had a full tank of sap this morning.

Sap ran most of the day.

Harvey & Ryan are boiling this evening.

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Harvey boiled this evening...45 gallons of Fancy.

Sap is still running tonight, but beginning to slow down. It is getting colder and it looks like it is going to freeze tonight.

Froze last night...in the 50's today with lots of sunshine.

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Sap ran very little today. Harvey has 3/4 of a storage tank of sap tonight. He will probably be able to boil tomorrow.

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Harvey & Ryan boiled this afternoon...30 gallons of very light Fancy.

Monday, March 8, 2010

Harvey & Ryan boiled this afternoon...40 gallons of ultra light Fancy.

Sap is still running tonight.

Well, Harvey did pretty good last night...40 gallons of Fancy.

Sap ran all night and he has a full tank of sap this morning.

Weather looks fantastic for the rest of the week for sugaring!

Sunday, March 7, 2010

Harvey is boiling tonight. The sap ran, but slowly for us today. There is still a cold wind in the air and we have lots of snow.

I am thinking the lower sugar bushes may have done better today.

Harvey boiled last night and made 30 gallons of Fancy.

We didn't get as big a sap run as we hoped for yesterday. The wind was really cold, surprised we got any sap yesterday.

Last year on this day, it was our first boil and we made A-Dark.

Went for a walk with my dogs yesterday and saw a mink for the first time. He almost ran right in front of us. Must be the Year of the Weasel for me. Didn't have my camera, so I found this picture on the internet.

Saturday, March 6, 2010

No sap yesterday. The wind was too cold.

Today looks like it may be a good one! 15 degrees last night, up in the 40's today with lots of sunshine. All the sugar makers are on high alert!

Friday, March 5, 2010

1 barrel of Fancy yesterday = 30 gallons. What a great start...we hope it keeps on running!

Thursday, March 4, 2010

Harvey started boiling at 4:30 p.m. I just got back from bringing him his supper. He is making Fancy today. Reminder...you can click on the picture to magnify.

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Harvey started boiling at 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. - 50 Gallons of Fancy.

At 5:00 p.m., Harvey had a full tank of sap and running into the 2nd tank.

Wow, what a great start to the season!
Good morning! Harvey has 2 full tanks of sap (1 tank was full when he shut down last night) and sap started running into the 3rd tank before it froze last night.

Harvey will be boiling today.

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Harvey & Ryan boiled this afternoon...30 gallons of A-Medium, changing over to Fancy.

He also has a full tank of sap and beginning to run into the other storage tank.

He had to stop boiling because he ran out of concentrate that the RO produces.

He will be boiling tomorrow.

Harvey has a full storage tank (1,200 gallons) of sap and still running. We had a freeze last night and now it is warming up and the sun is coming out. Stay tuned!

Monday, March 1, 2010

Another boiling day. Sap began running this morning and Harvey started boiling around 3:30 p.m. and finished at 5:00 p.m. 15 gallons of A-Medium.
